Stanley Buder is a native New Yorker with a B.A. from City College/CUNY, and an M.A. and Ph.D. (1966) from the University of Chicago. The former chair of the history department at Baruch, he has taught at Tufts, Cambridge University, the University of Illinois in Chicago, and the Illinois Institute of Technology as well as at Baruch College and the CUNY Graduate Center and is now professor emeritus. His scholarly interests are the history of city planning, modern American history, and business history. He was a Senior Fulbright Professor at the American Study Center, National University of Singapore in 1999. Among his publications are, Pullman: An Experiment In Industrial Order and Community Planning and Visionaries and Planners: The Garden City and the Modern Community. Pullman has been in continuous print since 1967 and has been adopted for course work in over two hundred universities. Visionaries and Planners was a Choice selection as an Academic Book of the year, 1991-92. The reviewer described it as “one of the landmark books in urban studies to appear in recent years and will surely take its place among the best books of 20th century planning history.” Capitalizing on Change: A Social History of American Business will be published by The University of North Carolina Press in spring 2009 in the Luther H. Hodges Series on Business, Society, and the State.
