WELCOMEYou are in the right place and you are here at the right time: New York City at the turn of the millennium. The world today is connected in a multitude of ways. Two thousand years ago it is said that all roads led to Rome. Today you can say that information, media, and connections of every kind, emanate from or find their way through New York. New York is a dynamic city embedded in a complex world and a fascinating place to study and learn. As befits a truly world city, the people of New York hail from every corner of the globe. The Baruch student body, the most ethnically diverse of any college in the nation, reflects this complex multicultural dynamic. Our courses cover everything from the history to the current social, economic, political, cultural, and artistic realities of Africa, Latin America, The Caribbean, and the United States. The Black and Hispanic Studies department is dedicated to preserving the histories and exploring the cultures of African and Latino peoples in a national and global context. Our courses are also central to understanding concepts and processes like: economic and community development, social stratification, social responsibility, business ethics, and success. We invite you to take our classes, to participate in our many activities and events, and to contact us with any ideas, projects, or suggestions. Welcome to your Department of Black and Hispanic Studies! Dr. Héctor Cordero-Guzmán, Chair |
