Eloise Quiñones Keber (PhD, Columbia University) is Professor
of Art at Baruch College and the Graduate Center of CUNY. She is a Pre-Columbian
art historian, with research interests in Aztec art before and after
the Spanish conquest, ancient Mexican manuscripts, and the cultural
encounter between Aztecs (Nahuas) and Spaniards in 16th-century Mexico. She is the author of Codex Telleriano-Remensis: Ritual, Divination,
and History in a Pictorial Aztec Manuscript (University of Texas Press,
1995), which was honored with the 1996 Ralph Waldo Emerson Award from
the Phi Beta Kappa Society. She is co-author of Art of Aztec Mexico (National
Gallery of Art, 1983); editor of Chipping Away on Earth (Labyrinthos
Press, 1994), In Chalchihuitl in Quetzalli(Labyrinthos Press, 2000),
and Representing Aztec Ritual: Performance, Text, and Image in the Work
of Sahagún (University Press of Colorado, 2002); and co-editor
of Mixteca-Puebla: Discoveries and Research in Mesoamerican Art and
Archaeology (Labyrinthos Press, 1994) and The Work of Bernardino de Sahagún:
Pioneer Ethnographer of 16th-Century Aztec Mexico (University of Texas
Press, 1988). She is a contributor to The Dictionary of Art, Encyclopedia
of Latin American History and Culture, Encyclopedia of Mexico,and
The Oxford Encyclopedia of Mesoamerican Cultures,as well as anthologies
in the U. S., Mexico, and Europe. Articles and reviews have appeared
in Mexicon, Latin American Indian Literatures Journal, Colonial Latin
American Historical Review, Colonial Latin American Review, Ethnohistory,
Aztlan,and Journal de la Société des Américanistes. She was honored with the Baruch College Presidential Excellence Award
in 1996, and has been the recipient of fellowships and grants from the
Guggenheim Foundation,the American Council of Learned Societies, the
National Endowment for the Humanities, the Ford Foundation, the Mellon
Foundation, the Getty Foundation, and the American Philosophical Society.
