From Sardinia to Berlin:
Photographs by Leonard Sussman

May 4 – May 25, 2005

Two radically different locales, Sardinia and Berlin, are the subjects of Leonard Sussman's solo exhibition of photographs From Sardinia to Berlin, on view at Baruch College's Mishkin Gallery, Wednesday, May 4 through Wednesday, May 25, 2005. This exhibition is the first part of the Baruch College Photography Festival, which continues in June with a juried exhibition of new works by the Baruch faculty and staff.

Mr. Sussman's older work, dating from the 1990s through 2001, features the landscape and topography of Sardinia. In black-and-white silver prints Sussman focuses on the rocks, trees and stone fences of this rugged island to achieve dramatic studies in texture and design. The photographs have a tactile quality and are both abstract and intimate.

In sharp contrast, Sussman's most recent work is focused on the Berlin subway system. His visual tour of the underground proceeds from station to station, from the Zoological Gardens stop to Freidrichstrasse to Alexanderplatz. Using both color digital images and color prints, Sussman studies the structure of such man-made objects and forms as escalators, scales, mirrors and steel columns. Here many of his images are angular and geometric with refractions of light creating additional designs within the images.
