As an Ad Hoc Major
Biology may be taken as an ad hoc major. Baruch policy allows students whose educational objectives are not met by an existing department to devise an ad hoc study pattern in their chosen area. This means students may design a major by combining courses from within The Department of Natural Sciences. They must first, however, develop an approved written rationale for their selected course pattern.
The biology major aims to guide students towards excellence, professional competence, and further education in the fields of life sciences, chemistry, environmental sciences, and medical and health care programs. Students combine courses in biology, chemistry, and physics as preparation for graduate study and research, for training in medicine and other health-related professions, and for teaching biology, chemistry, and general science. The courses also serve non-degree students who enter the program to fulfill the requirements for a change in career.
Among graduates of the program are research scientists, teachers, doctors, dentists, nurses, physical therapists, chiropractors, physicians' assistants, and laboratory technicians.
Prospective students are urged to register with the office of the Department of Natural Sciences early in their college careers. Each student will be assigned an individual advisor who will assist in formulating the specific ad hoc major program designed to attain the desired educational objectives.
As a Minor
Biology may also be taken as part of a natural sciences Tier III Minor. Students will select two science courses at the 3000 level, and one capstone at the 4000 level.
Students might wish to minor in biology in order to pursue general intellectual interests or specific career objectives. For example, students can complete some of the science courses required for admission to medical school by doing a minor in biology.
