Ellen Laura Block, Associate Professor of English, is currently the ESL Coordinator for the English Department. Her research interests focus generally on areas of applied linguistics, particularly on literacy studies, cross-cultural learning, global studies, the metacognitive aspects of learning, and the teaching of composition and reading to speakers of other languages.
She currently teaches courses in a variety of composition courses and English 4015, the Globalization of English. She is a recipient of the Newbury Award for Distinguished Research in Second Language Research and has published articles in TESOL Quarterly and similar journals, particularly on reading in a second language. She has been active in local, state, and national organizations concerned with strengthening English education for native and non-native speakers of English.
