awards for students

To recognize excellence, the Department of English annually confers two awards to top-ranking literature students:

The Excellence in English Award is given to an outstanding literature major.

The Addison Gayle Fellowship Award is given to a graduating student who has excelled in an African-American literature course.

Student Journal encounters

The department co-sponsors (with JWP) the literary journal Encounters, which publishes student poetry, fiction, and commentary. Contributing to the journal or working on the production staff gives students a means for self-expression and the opportunity to build a portfolio of published work.  This semester's deadline for submissions is March 31st.

The Addison Gayle Lecture Series

The Addison Gayle Lecture Series, an annual college-wide event, features lectures by noted scholars and activists. The lecture series is named in honor of the noted African-American writer and critic who was a Distinguished Professor and long-time member of the Department of English.
