Department of Journalism and the Writing Professions Announces Four Annual Journalism Scholarships

The Department of Journalism and the Writing Professions in the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences is extremely pleased to announce the creation of four annual journalism scholarships through a grant from The Harnisch Foundation. Every outstanding junior with a 3.0 or higher GPA who has declared a major within the new Department of Journalism and the Writing Professions is eligible for consideration.

Congratulations to the winners for 2008-09: Arvind Dilawar; Lillian Rizzo; Yulia Borovskaya; and Kerri Jarema!

Up to $6,000 per student will cover tuition, a summer stipend to allow for an internship, targeted assistance for technology, and the possibility of travel funds and fees for outside seminars.  The scholarship is renewable in the senior year for high achieving junior recipients.

This expands the Harnisch Scholars program originally funded by Baruch alumnus Bill Harnisch through the William F. Harnisch Foundation. Since 2003, 48 Harnisch Scholars have been honored with full tuition and other support.  The new Harnisch Scholars will be funded by his wife, whose journalism career included work in newspapers, radio, television, magazines, and online.

"We are grateful to Ruth Ann Harnisch for her support of our students and for recognizing the importance of journalism and the writing professions as a field of study," said President Kathleen Waldron.

"We are thrilled with this fabulous opportunity that Ruth Ann Harnisch is providing to Baruch College students," said Geanne Rosenberg, associate professor and Chair of the Department of Journalism and the Writing Professions.  "Ruth Ann Harnisch's commitment to excellence in journalism at Baruch will have a tremendously positive impact upon our new department and bodes well for a vibrant future for journalism in
this Internet age and in society at large."
