The Scrapbook (Dedicated to my mother)
By Sherese Francis

I imagine the years from now
When you’re finally
At peace, what pieces
Of you will I have left?
Collections of faded pictures
Copied over and over
In my mind
I know that look
Is losing its luster
But every now and then
The image shines through
The wear and tear of age

The wrinkles etched
Into your body
The workings of
Time and Work
Grays have painted over your
Striking black velvet canvases
Your somber countenance
With eyes that speak truths
Of wrongs in past and present
A rough sketch, still
A work in progress
The curvature of your lips
Revealing that cheerful smile
A sculpted masterpiece.
