Keepers of History: The African Griots (Edited Version)
By Sherese Francis

Through the silence a single voice echoes
He is followed by the bass of the drumbeat
On the tama, the clanging of the saber
The strained sound of the stringed kora
All of these are his chorus singing
With his voice rattling the ears
Of his audience lost in his trance.

His power is not in physical strength
Nor in wealth, but it does lie in
The mighty power of the tongue
In which he speaks life and death
Praise and doom, still most vital
Bringing the past to present
Pulling it from the vast depths
Of the archives of his mind. Stories

Of generations and families
Golden ages and wars
Heroes and the common
Come alive in his music
They come alive in his words
Binding time with his lips
Shaping time with his movements
Of his hands, legs, face, body
Each telling a new creation

He lives in those who live to speak
To be the keepers of stories
The keepers of history.
