FAQs
What does a consultant do?
Consultants provide support for undergraduate and graduate students at Baruch to improve their writing and English language skills and to become more independent, confident, and versatile writers. Consultants work one-to-one and via email with student writers, document sessions with records, conduct small group workshops, actively engage with and participate in professional development, and participate in pilot programs in collaboration with faculty and other support units of the college.
What are the necessary qualifications?
An M.A., M.F.A, or Ph. D. (or current candidacy with significant work toward degree) in Writing, Rhetoric & Composition, TESOL, English, or related field; experience teaching college-level writers from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds; solid underpinnings in writing center scholarship, college composition, English language learning issues, and/or writing across the curriculum; an active writing life; patience and a sense of humor.
That said, exceptions will be happily made for someone with scholarly background in a different discipline who can demonstrate the ability to do the work described above. In these (and all) cases, the cover letter will be read carefully for evidence of reflection, engagement, and expertise, and will be the primary means for selecting candidates for interviews.
When is the Writing Center open?
The Writing Center is open in the Fall and Spring semesters only: Monday-Thursday, 10am-8pm, Friday 10-2, and Saturday 11-3. With a few minor exceptions, we follow the class schedule as determined by the office of the registrar: http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/registrar/due_dates.htm.
In addition, you can anticipate working an additional hour monthly for staff development meetings, and an extra day before the beginning of the semester for staff orientation.
What is the pay rate?
Consultants are paid on the CUNY Non-Teaching Adjunct I scale, currently $38.91/hr (as of 7/15/10). Appointments are available for 8-15 hours a week. Holidays are not paid. All consultants must abide by PSC-CUNY negotiated workload limits, explained here under “workload”: http://www.psc-cuny.org/adjunctpamphlet.htm. Re-appointments are available based on satisfactory performance.
How often do you hire?
When we have openings, we generally hire in early-to-mid-December and late July. Because of low staff turnover, we tend to only have openings every two or three semesters.
How do I apply?
Please electronically submit a C.V., a cover letter explaining your interest in the position and approaches to working with student writers, and the names and contacts of three references to:

Please write “Consultant Application” in the subject line.

How many people apply for consulting positions?
We receive on average 75-100 resumes for every consulting position available.
Would it be possible to schedule an informational interview, or to drop by the Writing Center for a tour and learn more about the position?
While we genuinely appreciate your interest to learn more about our center, our schedules and staffing, when combined with the number of applicants each year, do not allow for interviews other than those scheduled as a result of the application process.
