Baruch College Helps Community Through Hurricane Sandy

BCHSSBaruch College takes pride in being a good neighbor to its community by providing education, programming and expertise in a variety of disciplines. Our Continuing and Professional Studies group offers practical courses in many subjects to neighbors; the Baruch Performing Arts Centers hosts award winning drama, dance, and more and the Field Center for Entrepreneurship provides startup help to local businesses. However, on October 28, Baruch College extended a much-needed and different kind of helping hand to the community when it proudly served as one of New York City’s largest shelters during one of this area’s worst weather crises – Hurricane Sandy.

Bearcats NCAA Playoff Bound

vb In a case of history repeating itself, the Baruch women’s volleyball and men’s soccer teams head to the first round of the NCAA Division III tournaments this week. Both nabbed CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Tournament Championships, post–Hurricane Sandy.
On Friday, Nov. 9, the volleyball team takes on Eastern University in Salisbury, Md., while the soccer team faces off against Brandeis University in Boston on Saturday, Nov. 10. It will be the third trip to the NCAA playoffs for each team.

The volleyball and soccer teams, as well as women’s cross country, each added a notch to their CUNYAC Championship title belts: Volleyball won for the second straight year, and a total of six times in team history; men’s soccer earned two previous wins, and cross country grabbed titles in 2007 and 2009.

Baruch College Implements CUNY-Wide Revised Tobacco-Free Policy

tfBaruch College is launching its Clean Space campaign to promote positive health behaviors and a tobacco-free campus. The campaign is part of a CUNY-wide initiative to provide a healthy and safe environment for students, employees, and visitors.

At its meeting on January 24, 2011, the Board of Trustees of The City University of
New York approved an expanded tobacco policy, making CUNY the largest tobacco-free university system in the United States. All CUNY schools are implementing the revised tobacco policy as part of the Tobacco-Free CUNY initiative that offers information and resources online.

The tobacco-free policy applies to every person who comes to a CUNY campus, including visitors, faculty, staff, volunteers, students, contractors, and service representatives.
