General Education is central to Baruch College's mission. The courses of our Gen Ed curricula shape the experience that the College offers all of our undergraduate students, whether they pursue a degree in the Zicklin School of Business, the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, or the School of Public Affairs. These courses reflect the College’s commitment to the ideal of education as a transformation of the whole person through study of the arts and sciences.
Baruch College offers two distinct Gen Ed curricula. Many courses are shared
by the two, but the requirements and structures differ:
Students who enter Baruch beginning in fall 2013 follow Pathways at Baruch. Pathways at Baruch shares a structure and a set of requirements (but not necessarily courses) with all CUNY colleges. The structure includes a required core, a flexible core, and a "college option."
- Re-entry students: Students who entered Baruch before fall 2013 but who will be returning in fall 2013 after more than one semester away from the college will follow Pathways at Baruch. (Those away for only one semester will follow the Baruch Common Core.)
Students who entered Baruch before fall 2013 follow the Baruch Common Core. The Baruch Common Core includes introductory courses in a variety of disciplines in the arts and sciences (Tiers I and II) and requires students to minor in a single area in the liberal arts (Tier III).
- Opting in to Pathways: Students who entered Baruch before fall 2013 may decide to opt-in to the Pathways curriculum, but if they do they may not opt back out. For more details please visit Pathways at Baruch and explore the "opt-in" page.
