H1N1 Prevention
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of H1N1 flu include fever (over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit) or chills and cough or sore throat. Those with flu-like illness should stay away from classes and limit interactions with other people, except to see medical care, for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever without the use of fever-reducing medications, such as Tylenol and ibuprofen.
The CDC has published several measures to help prevent the spread of the flu. Here are a few things you can do to help prevent the spread of the flu in the Baruch community:
- Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleansers are also effective.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough and sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth, germs are spread this way.
- If you have the flu or flu-like symptoms, stay home from work or school and avoid contact with others as much as possible.
- Consider getting a free seasonal flu vaccine at the annual Baruch College Flu Clinic to be offered in late October (more information will follow later in the semester).
- You can boost your immune system by getting enough sleep, eating healthfully, exercising, and managing stress.
