A study guide for the Freshman text is available at
Congratulations again on your acceptance to Baruch College! The Student Life Team at
Baruch College has been busy preparing for your arrival and are looking forward to
meeting you. This is undoubtedly an exciting time as you prepare to embark on the next
chapter of your life. We have little doubt that your journey with us is going to be
marked with some exciting, challenging and memorable experiences.
Wednesday, August 27th, from 9am till 7pm marks the start of your Baruch College
academic journey. We will kick off the year with the an official opening ceremony for
new students - Baruch College Convocation Day. This is a defining ceremony where
you will be formally inducted into the college. During the ceremony you will have the
opportunity to hear from Baruch College President, Dr. Mitchel Wallerstein as well as
our Provost, Dr. David Christy. The Ceremony will also be attended by the College
Deans as well as faculty and senior level administrators.
The day will be marked by many “firsts”. During the day you will attend your first class
of the semester, Freshman Seminar, and get to meet your cohort for the first time. You
will have the opportunity to attend engaging programs and workshops, meet your
Freshman Seminar Peer Mentor, attend your very first Baruch College Block party (on
the Baruch College Plaza!) and get a first-hand look at student life at Baruch College. It
will undoubtedly leave you wanting more!
Each year, a committee of faculty, students, and administrators selects a book for the
entire Baruch community to read as a shared activity. This year’s selection is How to
Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia by Mohsin Hamid. As a gift for you to keep, we are
presenting you with a free copy of this best-selling book. We ask that you read the
book in its entirety by the time we reconvene at Convocation on Wednesday, August
27th. While reading, please make note of any powerful characters and/or scenes that
captured your attention, left you wondering, or challenged your views. At Convocation,
author Mohsin Hamid will deliver the keynote address. Later in the day, your Freshman
Seminar class will meet for the first time to further discuss the book’s themes.
We hope that by making How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia your summer reading,
you will come to Baruch inspired to learn and to challenge yourself for what lies ahead.
On behalf of the Baruch College Student Life Team, I look forward to celebrating your
journey with you!
