Peers for Careers

Peers for Careers are highly trained undergraduate student leaders who serve as peer career coaches on topics such as career exploration, résumé writing, cover letters, thank you notes, interviewing and job searching. It is a two-tiered leadership program that prepares students for progressively more advanced leadership roles within the Starr Career Development Center (SCDC) and in their extracurricular and professional lives.

Role of a Tier 1 Peer
Tier 1 Training prepares students to provide one-on-one résumé reviews, cover letter and thank you letter critiques as well as advisement on general career exploration, the SCDC website, Starr Search, and campus outreach. Peers assist the staff of the SCDC with administrative tasks as well as presentations, job fairs, and other career programs. Peers serve on Center Committees such as Budget, External Communication (Ticker/Blog), Internal Communication (Facebook), Publicity, Alumni, and Philanthropy/Fundraising. They also spearhead an annual business attire clothing swap/charitable fundraising event entitled Suit Up for Success. In addition to receiving comprehensive and personalized training, Peers also receive weekly supervision and mentorship from SCDC Staff. Peers who meet performance standards of Tier 1 may receive additional training as a Tier 2 Peer to learn mock interviewing and workshop facilitation.

Role of a Tier 2 Peer
Tier 2 Training prepares Peers to provide one-on-one videotaped mock interviews, facilitate workshops on behalf of the SCDC, and take on Co-Trainer responsibilities for future trainings. Tier 2 Peers also help on-board new Peers through one-on-one training, shadowing, and small group meetings. In addition to providing résumé, cover letter, and thank you note reviews, they also focus on facilitating mock interviews, workshops, and other special programs.  Peers serve on Center Committees mentioned above. Tier 2 Peers also receive weekly supervision and mentorship from SCDC Staff.
