SPA Professor Sarah Ryan, and MPA Candidates Annie Balocating, Satoshi
Ohno, Della Saju, and Jennifer Walker.
Rwanda, the central-African nation known
mainly for its 1994 genocide, now boasts the highest percentage of female legislators
in the world. But in 2008, nearly half of its households are headed by females
and more than 60% of the population subsists on less than 50¢ per day. Rwandan
women's lives are complex, as we discovered in our recent trip to the country.
Join us to learn about the progress and challenges faced by women of this beautiful

HIV Awareness and STD Testing and Counseling
The Ryan-NENA
Community Health Center.
Did you know that The Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 19 million new STD infections
occur every year, almost half of them among young people ages 15 to 24. These
estimates include 40,000 new cases of HIV infection. Of the more than 900,000
AIDS cases reported to CDC through 2004, 18% were among Hispanic adults and
adolescents. Get educated. Approximately 37,000 people were newly diagnosed
with HIV; 26% of these were women. There were about 127,000 women
living with HIV in 2005. Free HIV testing and counseling will also be provided
as well as free preventive education, condom demonstrations and pamphlets.

STD/HIV/HPV Awareness: Lecture and Discussion
The
Ryan-NENA Community Health Center.
Did you know that more than 20 diseases can be transmitted
sexually. Very few are "reportable" infections due to lack of diagnosis
and treatment, but many have serious and costly consequences. Each year one-quarter
of the estimated 12 million new cases of STDs, other than HIV, in the U.S.
occur among teenagers. Approximately 37,000 people were newly diagnosed with
HIV, 26% of these were women. There were about 127,000 women living
with HIV in 2005. Among sexually active females, the prevalence of HPV infection
was highest for those in the youngest age groups, approximately 40% in those
aged 14--19 years and 50% in those aged 20--24 years. Join the Hermanas in
a lecture and discussion of STD/HPV/HIV awareness and Prevention.

"Guns and Chiffon" Documentary Film (2004)
on women in Ireland's fight for independence; Free!
Introduction and discussion led by Mary McGlynn, English Dept.
Guns and Chiffon tells the story of the involvement
of women in Ireland's
fight for national independence, from the 1916 Rising, through the War of Independence
and into the Civil War. It also tells the story of the fight for the rights
of workers and the struggle for equal opportunities and votes for women. Their
story is told by themselves and in their own voices. Guns and Chiffon commemorates
the 80th anniversary of the internment of over 550 women imprisoned by the Irish
Free State because they would not surrender their ideal of the Republic. The
century had opened with promise: by 1918 women had gained their vote and one
of their number, Countess Markievicz, was elected to Parliament at Westminster.

"Madame Chang Kai-Shek: China’s Eternal
First Lady"
A Presentation
by Journalist Laura Tyson Li. Introduced by Murray Rubinstein, History Department.
Beautiful,
brilliant, and captivating, Madame Chiang Kai-Shek seized unprecedented official
and unofficial power during China's long and violent civil war. One of history's
most intriguing and controversial political figures, she passionately argued
against Chinese Communism in the international arena and influenced decades
of Sino-American relations and modern Chinese history. In a life that spanned
the twentieth century (1898–2003), Madame Chiang was inextricably entwined
with China's evolution from the imperial Qing Dynasty to the end of colonialism
in Hong Kong. Journalist Laura Tyson Li gives a presentation with images based
on her book on this important woman. Fluent in Mandarin, Laura Tyson Li spent
a decade living in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan as a business reporter for
the South China Morning Post and Taiwan correspondent for The Financial Times.
She has also written for The Economist.

"Iron Jawed Angels"
Film about Suffragists; Free!
The fight for women's voting rights has rarely been given as dramatic
a treatment as in Iron Jawed Angels. Hilary Swank (Boys Don't Cry) and Frances
O'Connor (Mansfield Park) star as second-wave suffragettes Alice Paul and Lucy
Burns, who led the final fight for the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
Though the movie sometimes tries too hard to avoid the stigma of a period piece
(the soundtrack features electric guitars, Swank has a steamy moment in a bathtub,
and the editing is jagged and flashy), the mounting energy of the fight—and
the increasingly nasty opposition—gains real momentum when a wartime
picket line leads to Paul, Burns, and their sisters-in-arms being arrested
on trumped-up charges and imprisoned. The actors—including Julia Ormond
(Smilla's Sense of Snow), Angelica Huston (Prizzi's Honor, The Grifters), and
Brooke Smith (Vanya on 42nd Street)—give fervent, determined performances.

"Shirley Chisholm '72: Unbought and Unbossed" (Documentary
film 2005); Free!
Presented
by Dr. Barbara Winslow (Brooklyn College), who is researching and collecting
the papers of Shirley Chisholm.
In 1968, Shirley Chisholm becomes the first black
woman elected to Congress. In 1972, she becomes the first black woman to run
for president. Shunned by the political establishment, she's supported by a motley
crew of blacks, feminists, and young voters. Chisholm ran her campaign on her
own terms. She spoke her mind and was not beholden to any group or committee.
She failed to get the nomination but she was taken very seriously and provided
a symbolic victory for anyone who has ever dreamed the American Dream.

"A Cross-Dressing Woman Cavalry Officer
in Russia's War Against Napoleon: Nadezhda Durova's Career as Aleksandr Aleksandrovich,
1783-1866"
Lecture
and Presentation by Hilde Hoogenboom, (University of Albany).
Ever since Pushkin
published Nadezhda Durova's military memoirs, The Cavalry Maiden (1836), on
fighting in disguise as a man during the Napoleonic Wars, readers and scholars
have focused on the gender issues of her life as a crossdresser. This talk
argues that in her memoirs and long life, Durova expressed her identity primarily
through her class, as a noble who upheld the codes of honor and courage, which
perhaps explains why she was accepted as a "he" by Russians.

"Getting Out",
a play by Marsha Norman
Fine and Performing Arts Spring Production.
Tuesday, April 8 @ 7:30 pm
Wednesday, April 9 @ 7:30 pm
Thursday, April 10
@ 7:30 pm
Friday, April 11 @ 7:30 pm
Saturday, April 12, @ 2 pm & 7:30 pm
The
play revolves around an ex-convict (Arlene) who has just gotten out of prison
and who is trying to put her life back together. She is in her late 20's. As
we see Arlene adjusting to life on the outside we simultaneously see Arlie
(the younger Arlene) at different times in her life as an adolescent and teen.
She acts as Arlene's memory of her life when she made certain mistakes and
behaved badly. We learn that Arlie/Arlene was terribly abused and grew up in
quite difficult circumstances. It is a play about redemption and how we try
to make peace with our past and how we come to terms with our actions that
have hurt others. |
