Baruch College Presents Black History Month 2016 - BACK II BLACK: Community, Education, Health and Success

Baruch College celebrates Black History Month by approaching various issues that impact the community and highlighting the rich legacy and heritage. This year our theme is “Back to Black: Community, Education, Health and Success”. Come celebrate and engage in a month that continues to inspire change for all.

THU, FEB 11   "DEAR WHITE PEOPLE" (FILM SCREENING)
Take A Breath Series/ Diversity Film Series
Office of Diversity, Compliance & Equity Initiatives
This powerful, funny and very relatable satire about being a black face in a white place addresses race, gender and LGBTQ issues. Dr. Lewin from the Black and Latino Studies will lead a discussion after the film.

TUE, FEB 16   MOVE YA BODY!
Join us for an empowering, heart-pumping, exhilarating workout that speaks to your heart, body and mind allowing you to experience African cultural music.

    SPEAK YO' PEACE!
Various performers will showcase their talents and their expressions of Black culture. There will be an open mic portion that is open to the audience.

THU, FEB 18   AFRO-LATINO PEOPLES, POLITICS AND CULTURE
This event will discuss the politics and culture of Afro-Latinos. Monica Carrillo, an Afro-Peruvian hip-hop activist, writer, musician, and community leader will lead this discussion and provide a special performance.

MON, FEB 22   BLACKS IN THE WORKPLACE
Professional panel discussion featuring Baruch Alumni as they share their personal experiences working in Corporate America while being Black

TUE, FEB 23   I AM NOT MY HAIR: FIFTY SHADES OF BEAUTY
Join us in dissecting two intricate topics - body image and hair. This event will tackle societal beauty standards and how they affect the Black community. A natural hair ambassador will assist us with discussing beauty standards.

    I THINK I EAT HEALTHY?
Join us in discussing health issues that affect the Black community. This event will feature a guest speaker who will share how a life changing illness has forced him to make healthier decisions. We will also share nutritious alternitives for our favorite foods.

Join our annual Black faculty, staff, and student meet and greet. This is a great opportunity to network and strengthen the Black community at Baruch College.

    HIP HOP PEDAGOGY: THE EVOLUTION OF BLACK MUSIC
We will explore the evolution of black music and the roles it played in defining American Culture. From the drums of Africa to present day Hip-Hop, we will listen, learn, and, most of all, have fun.

Join us for a day of volunteering in New York City and give back to the community in celebration of BHM.

Join us in commemorating BHM with a dinner party like no other. We will exchange ideas and discuss critical topics to the Black community.

FRI, MAR 4   BLACK EXCELLENCE: BSU FASHION SHOW
Black Student Union (BSU) will host their 10th annual fashion show to end Black History Month. The show plays a pivotal role in showcasing talent and culture.
