Guest Speaker Sheryll Cashin, Professor of Law at Georgetown University

Sheryll Cashin writes about race relations, government and inequality in America. Her new book, Place Not Race: A New Vision of Opportunity in America (forthcoming Beacon Press, 2014), argues that affirmative action as currently practiced does little to help disadvantaged people and offers a new framework for true inclusion. Her book, The Failures of Integration (PublicAffairs, 2004) was an Editors' Choice in the New York Times Book Review.

Abraham M. Lackman
as guest speaker on the topic of
inexpensive and effective approaches and innovations in public higher education.


Abraham M. Lackman brings a broad range of experience in government and higher education. He spent 24 years as Secretary of the New York State Senate Finance Committee, and was budget director of New York City during the Giuliani administration. Following his service in government, he was President of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu) for eight years, where he was responsible for leading and coordinating the state and federal public policy advocacy of more than 100 New York colleges.

Upon concluding his tenure with the Commission (cIcu) in November 2009, Mr. Lackman launched the higher education and government consulting firm, Praxis Insights. Lackman also serves as Senior Officer in Civic Affairs at the Simons Foundation, where he helps build strategic relationships with governments, nonprofit organizations and other key partners to increase awareness, action and resources devoted to math and science education. He serves on the boards of Long Island University and the Public Policy Institute of New York State.

Lackman earned a B.A. from New York University and holds an M.A. in economics from the State University of New York at Albany. He was Clarence D. Rapplyea Government Scholar in Residence at Albany Law School's Government Law Center in 2010-2011, and currently serves as Scholar in Residence at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Education.
