CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS
Nonprofit Management “Summer-in-New York”
Baruch College’s School of Public Affairs (SPA) now offers a 6-credit certificate in management of nonprofit organizations which can be completed in one intensive summer. Students from around the world participate in the program in cohorts of 20-25 students, who progress through the program’s courses while they gain professional experience in individually tailored internships in nonprofit organizations in New York City. Included in the experience are opportunities to meet with executives of local non-profit organizations, as well as chances to explore New York City’s many cultural attractions.
Curriculum
Baruch’s summer-in-the-city certificate in nonprofit management is an intense 4 week program running for the July summer session. Students enrolled in the program take two traditional three-credit classes and meet regularly with leaders of New York nonprofits and NGOs. The two traditional courses are PAF 9150 Introduction to the Nonprofit Sector and PAF 9151 Administration of Nonprofit and Voluntary Agencies.
Classes meet twice weekly for 4 hours, and require, on average, an additional 8 hours per week in preparation outside of class in reading, writing, and analysis. Some classes require group projects for which outside study session will be necessary. Overall, participants in the program should expect to devote 30-35 hours per week in study, class attendance, and event attendance during their four weeks with the program. Students will need access to Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word during the program, which they can either bring with them on a laptop computer, or access through Baruch’s on-campus computing facilities. In additions, Baruch’s Newman Library has a limited number of laptops available for load with appropriate software pre-loaded.
The Non-Credit Component
In addition to the credit-bearing curriculum, student in the summer program also spend three hours weekly in the non-credit “New York seminar” each Friday during which they learn about the city and its institutions and speak with representatives from various nonprofit and non-governmental organizations headquartered in the city. Attendance is not required, but the series is a vital part of the summer’s experience, and allows students to explore the dynamic range of New York’s nonprofit sector.
About the School of Public Affairs
The School of Public Affairs at Baruch College was established 15 years ago, but traces its roots to the establishment of City College’s Business and Civic Affairs program established in 1908. While Baruch has granted the Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) degree for fifty years, growth in demand for the degree through the 1980s impelled the college to create the independent School of Public Affairs in 1994. Starting with seven core faculty members, the school has grown to 45 fulltime faculty members enrolling nearly 900 graduate students, studying for degrees in public administration and educational leadership, in specializations ranging from policy analysis to healthcare administration to nonprofit management. The school has particular strength in the non-profit area, hosting the nationally-known Center for Nonprofit Strategy and Management which holds regular seminars for non-profit managers and executives, as well as inviting to campus innovative leaders and thinkers in the non-profit sector. The school has placed alumni with many leading nonprofit organizations throughout New York and the nation, including foundations, arts organizations, universities, healthcare providers, community improvement groups, and faith-based organizations. Details about the school and its faculty are available at the school website: www.baruch.edu/SPA.
Living in New York
New York City is one of the world’s great cities, but one which can easily overwhelm a newcomer or visitor. All students in Baruch’s summer-in-the-city program are given a thorough orientation to the city and its many attraction. Students meet regularly through the summer with a representative from the Office of Student Life who coordinates social events for participants in the program, smoothes any transitional challenges, and helps students acclimatize to life in fast-paced Manhattan. Participants in the program meet regularly as a group to take advantage of New York’s unique summer offerings, ranging from the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks celebration, to musical and theatrical performances, to outings to nearby beaches and parks. Students will work hard during the course of the summer, but will have ample opportunity to experience life in one of the most exciting and dynamic cities in the world.
Representatives from Baruch will facilitate all visa applications for program participants.
