Biography
Jennifer Goldstein is an Assistant Professor in the Baruch College School of Public Affairs of the City University of New York. Her areas of specialization are educational policy and leadership, and her work focuses on improving the quality of teachers and teaching in schools serving low-income children and children of color in the United States. Jennifer is particularly interested in how district leaders strategically employ human resource policies in order to develop the local teacher workforce. Her research utilizes organizational theory to examine teacher professionalization and the coordinated distribution of leadership in schools and school districts, in particular how these forces affect teacher workforce quality. Her recent publications examine the policy of Peer Assistance and Review, and have appeared in Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, American Journal of Education, Journal of Personnel Evaluation in Education, and Educational Leadership. She is currently writing a book entitled Complexity and Courage in Teacher Evaluation: Professional Accountability and Peer Assistance and Review, to be published by Teachers College Press.
Jennifer teaches in the Aspiring Leaders Program (ALPs), which serves New York City teachers seeking the credentials to become school and district administrators. In addition to courses in her area of specialization, she teaches courses on the leadership of urban schools utilizing problem-based learning pedagogy. She was an elementary school teacher in Compton, California, and the teacher of a Newcomer Academy in Campbell, California, before completing her doctorate. She received her Ph.D. from the Stanford University School of Education and her B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley.
