Baruch College-American Humanics Nonprofit Leaders Certification Program

American Humanics is a national alliance of over 75 colleges and universities and more than 50 nonprofit organizations. American Humanics mission is to educate, prepare, and certify professionals to strengthen and lead nonprofit organizations. American Humanics efforts are directed at undergraduate students interested in integrating their career goals with their desire to serve humanity. Professor Stan Altman, Baruch campus director of the American Humanics Program notes "The New York City Metropolitan region is the home of over 10,000 nonprofit organizations with annual revenues that exceed $43 billion; the American Humanics program at Baruch may open new career opportunities in the nonprofit sector for students that share nonprofit organizations’ vision of service to humanity."

Requirements
The American Humanics program at Baruch College leads to certification after student members have completed a course of study and experiential learning opportunities that help them develop competencies required to be successful leaders in the nonprofit sector. Competency areas of study include: Introduction to the Nonprofit Sector, Ethics, Youth Development/Mentoring, Volunteer Management and Board Development, Fundraising and Resource Development, Finance, Management, and Marketing, and Technology. Students in the Baruch Program complete 18 credits of course work, 9 credits of which are satisfied through courses that are general part of their core curriculum requirements. The remaining 9 credits consist of a 3 credit internship seminar and 150 hours of field work in an unpaid internship in a nonprofit agency. In addition, students gain additional experience through their participation in the American Humanics Student Association, dealing with service to the college and the wide Baruch community. Participation in the Student Association provides students opportunities to work on their leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills as well as fund raising skills. Finally, every American Humanics member will participate in at least one American Humanics Management Institute held every January either in Kansas City, an east coast or the west coast city. The American Humanics Management Institute (AHMI) is an intensive educational symposium providing a capstone experience in nonprofit management and leadership education. Local and national nonprofit leaders present issues pertinent to professional leadership and engage participants through workshops, dialogues, forums and case studies.

American Humanics Academic Awards Students enrolled in the American Humanics program may apply for academic awards in the amount of $1,000 for full-time students and $500 for part-time students.
NextGen Leadership Program & Awards Students enrolled in the American Humanics program may apply for a NextGen award/stipend of $4,500. The awards are funded through a $5 million grant from the Kellogg Foundation, and are certification in nonprofit management, specifically the minimum 300-hour nonprofit internship. The NextGen Leaders program is designed to help a racially and ethnically diverse group of students with demonstrated leadership potential complete the requirements for American Humanics certification in nonprofit management, specifically the minimum 300-hour nonprofit internship. Students also receive support from a network of nonprofit leaders who serve as mentors.
