Mission Statement
The mission of the School of Public Affairs is to enhance the performance of governmental and nonprofit institutions in New York and the nation in the interest of effective and equitable public service and public policy in a diverse society. Using insights from theory, research, and practice, we are a multidisciplinary community of scholars engaged in teaching, research, and outreach to achieve this mission.
We place special emphasis on educating responsive and accountable leaders who combine managerial expertise, creative and critical thinking, and rigorous analysis in the formation and execution of public policy. The School also serves as a site for debate and reflection on issues of public importance to New York and the world beyond.
Adopted by the School of Public Affairs, November 21, 2002.
Goals and Objectives
The School of Public Affairs specializes in teaching, research, and service in the areas of municipal government, nonprofit management, policy analysis and evaluation, and educational administration. Focused on institutional leadership, our educational programs provide students in public service with the tools they need to plan strategically, budget wisely, and deliver the best, most innovative programs to their stakeholders. Drawing on the hard work of a highly productive faculty, our research and service programs apply leading-edge academic work to the policy and administrative problems of the City, the State, and the nation.
New York City is Your Classroom
With the Flatiron District and Silicon Alley only steps away, Baruch gives you prime access to a world center of new media and the technological innovation that is a unique resource of New York City. As a Baruch student, your education doesn’t end with the skills you learn in the classroom. You can apply those skills to producing results for the real people, communities, and organizations that are the force behind the city.
Whether they are researching the impact of information technology, training future City Council members, building collaboration among students across the country, or running municipal government, our faculty, students, and alumni have ideas, drive, and vision that effect changes with far-reaching consequences, especially for the New York City community.
Education for a New World
To ensure that our graduates will be prepared for the challenges of a technologically sophisticated workplace, the School of Public Affairs has made significant capital investments in computer and telecommunication resources, and the use of technology has been fully integrated into the curriculum. Students have access to modern computer laboratories, teleconferencing facilities, a sophisticated polling and survey laboratory, and increased course offerings via the Internet.
Baruch provides its students with a modern and technologically advanced learning environment. In 1994, the College opened its state-of-the-art Information and Technology Building. Its centerpiece is the William and Anita Newman Library, which provides the Baruch community with access to vast information resources, including several hundred online databases through the Dow Jones News/Retrieval, LEXIS/NEXIS, and DIALOG services. The building also houses the Baruch Computing and Technology Center, which provides over 500 computer workstations with access to the Internet and multimedia capability.
