Journalism

As a Major

Journalism students can begin their study learning the fundamentals - reporting, researching, and writing news and feature articles, with a focus on fairness, accuracy, balance, and thoroughness. They may then delve deeper, learning how journalists dig below the surface to gather facts and evidence while achieving a personal style that is both honest and imaginative.

Courses cover a wide range of journalistic concerns and techniques, from investigative journalism to criticism and review. These include:

  • Legal and ethical issues that arise in the media
  • Application of moral reasoning to complex questions
  • Media's responsibilities to the public
  • Pressures exerted by government and business
  • Daily dilemmas of media professionals, e.g., source confidentiality and going undercover
  • Central production and reportage techniques in television news
  • Electronic research methods and resources for writers
  • Photojournalism
