21st Century Makeovers For The New York Metro Region
June 14, 2010
8:30 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.
SUBJECT: Airports underpin our region’s economy. To manage dramatic growth, minimize risk, boost efficiency, and reduce environmental impacts, they’re undergoing historic change. NextGen is a driver!
Event Registration:
Airports are vital to our region’s economy, including the real estate sector. But they’re operating near or at maximum capacity, largely with 20th century technology. Customer satisfaction is low. Air traffic is projected to grow sharply. Modernizing and upgrading operations, expanding capacity, boosting efficiency, and meeting sustainability goals together constitute a challenge that in scope and complexity has no precedent in aviations over 100-year history.
Work to meet that challenge is under way, and advanced technologies and safety management systems play starring roles in the drama. Notably, NextGen is driving a transformational shift from a ground-based system of air traffic control to a satellite-based system of air traffic management. Benefits include more efficient use of airspace, and reduction of risk, gridlock, fuel consumption, and environmental impacts, including noise pollution.
What does it take to implement these changes? How will they be financed? What are the challenges and opportunities? Members of Congress, top officials from the FAA and Port Authority, aviation executives and other aviation experts, and representatives of leading NGOs will examine the forces, factors, and issues in play.
