Investment and Legal Strategies for Advanced Energy Performance in Real Estate

June 19, 2014

8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Evidence of a seismic shift in the nation’s energy economy continues to mount. This month, Barclays downgraded its corporate bond outlook for the entire US electric-utility sector because of analyst concerns about the industry’s internal resistance to change, and the growing competition that it faces from the increasingly viable alternative of solar + storage. As a marketing partner of New York Energy Week, our conference will provide perspectives on innovative financing and legal strategies that will allow organizations to take the lead in ensuring advanced energy performance in the real-estate sector.

Continuing Education Units:

CM (APA-AICP) 2.0 hours.

CLE (NYS Courts) 2.0 hours (approval pending).

BOMI (3 hours for Asset Management, Commercial Property and Facility Management Systems)

EVENT LOCATION:

Hodgson Russ L.L.P., 1540 Broadway, Floor 24, New York, NY 10036 (Enter at 45th Street.)

Cost is at the core of every decision to invest in energy efficiency. Innovative financing approaches are critical in closing the gap between public policy and private interest by stimulating a market for energy investments. The opportunity for earning attractive returns by investing in energy efficiency makes a strong business case for enhancing value in real estate portfolios.
The regulatory climate for real estate investment has increased investor opportunities related to energy efficiency. Understanding legal issues around innovative energy financing is also crucial to incorporating energy efficiency in asset management. The development of efficiency standards, building codes and energy disclosure requirements is driving the adoption of city, state and national sustainability agendas—for example, New York City’s PlaNYC initiative and the global non-profit Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

As portfolios and technologies become more energy-conscious, asset owners and managers must navigate an increasingly complex landscape to effectively manage their holdings.

Learn how to organize and implement an energy-efficient framework for buildings or for a portfolio of properties from experts in energy, finance, law and compliance, who will cover topics such as:

Energy audits; certification to standards; and energy sources.

Identifying sources of capital; split incentives and energy-aligned leases; energy services agreements (ESAs); PACE financing, on-bill financing.

Emerging regulatory frameworks; standards of care in tort law.

Legal and regulatory compliance.

The conference will include speakers, panel discussions, breakout sessions and opportunities for networking. For further information, including sponsorship opportunities, please contact Emily Grace at emily.grace@baruch.cuny.edu or 646.660.6966.
