Welcome Undergraduates
from the Chair
The Psychology Department
prides itself in providing undergraduate students with exceptional
programs for psychology majors, minors and others wanting
to fulfill their core requirements. Each of our majors
is considered special and assigned a faculty member who is
available to them for academic guidance on an ongoing basis.
In addition, the Psychology Society and the Psychology Major
Meetings provides students with numerous opportunities for
assistance in graduate school aspirations or other career
goals after graduation. Majors also have the opportunity
to participate in internships located in some of New York
City's premier mental health facilities.
To become a psychology
major you must first take the Introduction to Psychology (Psy
1001), a survey course of the field and a prerequisite to
all advanced courses. Almost every chapter in the introductory
psychology textbook represents a specialty area in psychology
and as such can be intensely studied and form the basis of
a career in psychology. A psychology major is required to
complete a total of 24 credits in psychology.
Even though there are
entry-level jobs available for students having a Bachelors
in Psychology, we encourage students continue their education
and achieve a Masters Degree or Doctorate.
At the graduate level
the Department offers an MBA and an MS in Industrial/Organizational
Psychology. The MBA is a 54-credit program with 18 credits
in Psychology and the others in business. The MS is a 36-credit
program all in psychology. The MS requires a thesis or thesis
alternative where the MBA does not. The MS graduate
training would be most appropriate for those wishing to continue
on for a Ph. D. or those expecting to go into research/academia.
The majority of students
in the Masters Program work full time and take courses on
a part-time basis. All courses are given in the evening or
weekends.
There are jobs available
for those with Masters Degrees in Industrial/Organizational
Psychology with most residing in Human Resources.
For information about
applying to the Masters Program call or email the Graduate
Admissions Office at Baruch College or click on the link below.
Graduate
Programs
The Psychology Department
also houses the Ph. D. program in Industrial/Organizational
Psychology. This program is a 72-credit degree with an optional
internship. We admit five to six students per year. The program
follows the scientist/practitioner philosophy of graduate
education. Dr. Joel Lefkowitz directs this program at Baruch.
Applications for admission must be requested from the admissions
office of the City University Graduate School and University
Center at 33 West 42nd Street in New York City.
The faculty of the
Department has always emphasized excellence in teaching, scholarship
and concern for the welfare of students. I along with the
entire faculty in the Department welcome you.
