Research Activities

Daniel L. Benkendorf

I entered Baruch’s doctoral program in the fall of 2001.  I moved to New York to begin graduate school immediately after I received my undergraduate degrees in Advertising and Psychology from the University of Florida.  In the years since then, I have completed my doctoral coursework and successfully passed both my first (Fall 2002) and second (Fall 2004) doctoral examinations.  This year, I am beginning work on my dissertation under the guidance of Dr. Kristin Sommer.  My work is likely to extend research I am currently involved with looking at biased sampling and communication in small groups.

I am currently involved in several research projects in addition to my dissertation.  Kristen Kirkland (a fellow doctoral student), Dr. Sommer, and I are working together to examine the impact of perceived family obligations on termination decisions made by small groups.  We are utilizing a hidden profile paradigm in this study to examine biased sampling in the groups.

I and several other graduate students are also assisting Dr. Sommer in research investigating the cognitive and behavioral consequences of interpersonal rejection.  My independent research examines the effect of various discrete emotions on information processing.

Last year, I worked as an intern in Organization and Management Development at PepsiCo, Inc. in Purchase New York.  I am currently employed as a consultant by Sandra Hartog & Associates, a full-service management-consulting firm, based in New York.  I also work as a Project Assistant for Baruch College’s Career Development Center.

I have taught a number of undergraduate psychology courses including Abnormal Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Interviewing Techniques, Small Group Processes and Social Psychology.  I will be teaching a masters level course this summer at Baruch College.

I hope to gain a position as a tenure-track assistant professor at a four-year college or university upon the completion of my degree.  I currently live on the Upper East Side of Manhattan with my wife, Natasha and our pug, Daisy.
