Ashley Busing
I am currently in my fifth year of the I/O doctoral program at Baruch College. I have finished coursework and am working on current research projects. I received my undergraduate degree in 2002 from the University of South Florida.
Research Experience
As an undergraduate at University of South Florida (USF), I conducted research in the area of self-regulation, specifically how emotional distress can affect the ability to control impulses as moderated by goal setting. Dr. Donald Miles was my research advisor. I also volunteered in Dr. Carnot Nelson’s lab surveying at-risk mothers for a program called Healthy Families.
During my first two years in graduate school, I worked with Dr. Hannah Rothstein, Professor of the Management Department. I edited and organized research materials for her book on publication bias: Publication Bias in Meta-analysis: Prevention, Assessment, and Adjustments (2005). H. R. Rothstein, A. J. Sutton, M. Borenstein (Eds.). Wiley Publishing.
In my third year of the program, I began working with Dr. Kristin Sommer and participating in the social psychology lab. Under her advisory, I helped her conduct research on rejection and influence. Being part of the social psychology lab, I am able to discuss research ideas, my own and my peers, facilitating my development as a graduate student. The social psychology lab also attends the annual Society of Personality and Social Psychology conference (SPSP). I attended SPSP’s 2006 and 2007 conference. Currently, Kristin, other research assistants, and I are working on publishing her latest research on interpersonal rejection.
Additionally, Dr. Sommer is my thesis advisor for my Master’s thesis on self-enhancement in the workplace. I am proposing that leaders and peers will perceive self-enhancing behaviors differently, where leaders may focus on the competency and peers may focus on the likeability of the self-enhancer. I am currently pilot testing my materials and plan to finish data collection by the end of the semester.
Other research interests include personality psychology, self-esteem, cross-cultural issues in organizations, diversity in organizations, talent/performance management, and organizational culture.

Applied Experience
Currently, I am working at the New York Unified Court System in the Office of Court Research. I manage many projects involving surveys, program evaluation, and data management and evaluation. The biggest project I am involved with is Courtools, which is a performance management system for all court employees. Courtools is part of the National Center for State Courts, a global-reaching organization aimed at improving justice through leadership and service. The breadth of the project allows me to apply my interest in social psychology and organizational research.
