James McCarthy, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dr. James McCarthy is Baruch College’s Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Provost McCarthy joined Baruch in June 2007 from the University of New Hampshire where he was Professor of Health Policy and Management and Dean of the School of Health and Human Services. Prior to his appointment at UNH in 2001, he was Heilbrunn Professor of Public Health and Director of the Heilbrunn Center for Population and Family Health at Columbia University for 13 years.

Provost McCarthy has also taught in the Department of Community Health and General Practice at Trinity College in Dublin and the Department of Population Dynamics and Sociology at the Johns Hopkins University, where he also served as Director of the Hopkins Population Center for four years.

Provost McCarthy's main research interests are in demography and adolescent and reproductive health. His most recent book, with Nancy Riley, is Demography in the Age of the Postmodern. He earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from Princeton University.
