From:  Dave Christy, Provost

The City University of New York is committed to building an inclusive environment in which all students feel welcome. We understand that some students would like to use a "preferred name" rather than their legal name to indicate how CUNY faculty and staff should refer to them in the classroom and other institutional settings. For example, a student with the legal name of Jonathan Doe may wish to be known as Jon Doe or Jane Doe.

Currently, students may request the use of a preferred name by filling out a form with their college Registrar's office or through CUNYfirst's self-service function. Requested changes are then reflected in CUNYfirst, permitting faculty members to see the preferred name on their CUNYfirst rosters.

Beginning Friday, March 31, 2017 CUNY also incorporates the use of preferred names in Blackboard. Faculty members will see the students’ preferred names in Blackboard in lieu of their legal names. It also means that the course roster in Blackboard will be the same as the CUNYfirst roster, eliminating confusion caused by some students’ having different first names listed in the two systems. If you have any questions about the use of preferred names in Blackboard, please contact Blackboard Support Services at Baruch at the email address listed below.

For continuity purposes and to make identification of students easier should duplicate or similar names result from a preferred name change, CUNY will also begin supplying CUNYfirst EMPL IDs into Blackboard. Student EMPL IDs will appear in the course Grade Center in the Student ID field and should be used as a reference when reporting grades, and at other times when the verification of a student’s identity is necessary.

Please feel free to contact Kevin Wolff in BCTC with questions or concerns regarding this change.
