Subject: Smart phones are getting smarter. We should too.
Last spring the provost asked two members of the FPA theater faculty--Susan Tenneriello and Debra Caplan--to ask their students to make videos that address a specific academic integrity issue: use of cell phones during exams. In the process of making those videos, the students shared with each other experiences of members of the faculty not paying adequate attention to what goes on in classrooms during exams (some read newspapers, some text or send emails) and agreed that the basic issue was fairness: that the best way to ensure a level playing field for all students is to do what we can to ensure academic honesty—to pay attention to what happens during our exams.
Links to the videos our students made appear below. They reflect experience with and knowledge of what goes on in some of our classrooms:
Members of the faculty interested in working with the college’s Academic Integrity Committee—or in meeting informally to discuss such issues—are invited to let me know. Please also feel free to direct any students with such interests to me or to Chris Diggs (Christina.Diggs@baruch.cuny.edu) in the Office of the Dean of Students.
