Barbara Lawrence, Associate Provost for Academic Administration
Barbara Elizabeth Lawrence is a native of Chicago, Illinois and attended that city's elementary and secondary public schools. She pursued her undergraduate education at the University of Illinois, Urbana, where she received a B.A. degree in Political Science. Lawrence continued her study of political science at the Graduate School of the University of Chicago, and later received a Ph.D. in Politics from New York University where she was a Teaching Fellow and a Fellow at the Center for International Studies.
Dr. Lawrence began her professional career as a social worker in Chicago and later taught social studies in that city's secondary public school system. She moved to New York City to work for a national non-profit agency specializing in college counseling and admissions for minority students. She subsequently served for several years as an senior administrator at the New York State Council on the Arts.
Dr. Lawrence was a senior staff member on two New York City Charter Revision Commissions that were established to restructure the city's government after the US Supreme Court ruled certain of its offices were unconstitutional. Following adoption of the new city charter Dr. Lawrence went on to become research director for the New York State Charter Commission for Staten Island where she drafted a governance charter for a proposed City of Staten Island.
She joined Baruch College of the City University of New York where she has taught undergraduate courses in the Political Science Department and graduate courses in the Management and Public Administration Departments. When the School of Public Affairs was established in 1994, Dr. Lawrence became its director of administration and deputy to the dean. In 1996 she assumed the responsibilities of Associate Provost at Baruch College where, among other duties, she is responsible for faculty personnel procedures including, appointment, reappointment, tenure, and promotion.
Dr. Lawrence has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Culinary Institute of America and has chaired its Education Policy Committee and Trusteeship Committees. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Astronauts Memorial Foundation as a representative of families of deceased astronauts.
