After more than six years as Director of the Baruch College Honors Program, Professor Nancy Aries is moving into the newly created role of Academic Director of the Honors Program and returning to our School of Public and International Affairs (formerly SPA) as a full-time member of the faculty. As Academic Director and chair of the Honors Program’s Faculty Advisory Committee, Nancy will remain very much involved in the strategic development of honors at Baruch—and her legacy will continue to have great impact on our students: among other achievements, her creation of Creative Inquiry Day and our Office of National & Prestigious Fellowships Advising will engage students and many members of the faculty for years to come. Behind the scenes, Nancy’s many efforts to increase the efficiency of Honors processes have benefitted students in countless ways. Her successful efforts to work closely with the college’s admissions office on our faculty-driven admissions process in Honors have resulted in an outstanding series of Honors classes. For Nancy’s efforts in service of Honors at Baruch, she received the 2014 Baruch College Presidential Excellence Award for Distinguished Service.
Keeping Nancy onboard as Academic Director is one happy development. The other is the appointment as of July 5, 2016 of Dr. Jody Clark Vaisman as Director of the Honors Program. Many of you know Jody, who has been an Associate Director of Honors and Academic Program Manager since 2010. She hits the ground running: deeply involved in all aspects of the Program, she was the driving force behind the organization of the Inquiry Scholars Program, a new research-oriented honors track, and has worked closely with faculty on the development of “Guiding Principles of Honors Courses.” She has recruited outstanding faculty to teach in the program, has organized the “Faculty Forays” and “Free Thinking Lunches” initiatives, and has overseen student communication, including social media and the Program’s web site. In 2015 her work was recognized by the Presidential Excellence Award for Innovation.
I look forward to working with Jody and Nancy on Honors with renewed vigor and I hope that even more of you will engage with the program than before! I’m eager to see how Honors@Baruch develops in years to come.
