From: Professor Esther Allen, Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Literature
Students in Prof. Jean Gaffney's Independent Study course are involved in two laboratory research projects. In the first, they engineer proteins to inhibit enzymes associated with cancer. In the second, they collaborate with Prof. David Gruber to identify new proteins involved in biofluorescence and bioluminescence. In addition to learning about and implementing biochemical techniques and collaborating with labs across New York City, students learn to make a compelling case for their scientific research and present posters at Creative Inquiry Day in the spring.
