Professor David Schuff - Biographical Sketch

David Schuff is Professor of Management Information Systems and the Academic Director of the Fox Executive Doctorate in Business Administration. His research interests include the application of information visualization to decision support systems, data warehousing, and the impact of user-generated content on organizations and society. David’s work has appeared in numerous journals, including Management Information Systems Quarterly, Decision Sciences, Decision Support Systems, Information & Management, Communications of the ACM, IEEE Computer, AIS Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction, and Information Systems Journal.

David has taught in the BBA, MBA, and Executive MBA programs in Colombia and Japan. He teaches courses in data analytics, information systems strategy, process design and improvement, and application development. David has received the MIS Department’s teaching award several times (most recently in 2016), and in 2013 received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching.

David holds a BA in Economics from the University of Pittsburgh, an MBA from Villanova University, an MS in Information Management from Arizona State University, and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Arizona State University.

 

Description of the Talk:

Two Projects about the Democratization of Analytics

Enabling Self-Service BI through a Dimensional Model Management Warehouse
(with Karen Corral, Robert St. Louis, and Greg Schymik)

The promise of Self-Service Business Intelligence (BI) is its ability to give business users access to selection, analysis, and reporting tools without intervention from IT. This is essential if BI is to radicallytransform how laypeople make decisions. However, while some progress has been made through tools such as SAS Enterprise Miner, IBM SPSS Modeler, and RapidMiner, analytical modeling remains firmly in the domain of IT departments and datascientists. The development of tools that mitigate the need for modeling expertise remains the “missing link” in self-service BI, but prior attempts at developing modeling languages for nontechnical audiences have not been widely implemented. By introducing a structured methodology for model formulation specifically designed for practitioners, this project fills the unmet need to bring model-building to a mainstream business audience. We also show how tobuild a dimensional Model Management Warehouse that supports the proposed methodology, and demonstrates the viability of this approach by applying it to a problem faced by the Division of Fiscal and Actuarial Services of the US Department of Labor.

Data Science for All:  A University-Wide Course in Data Literacy

Infusing data literacy into a curriculum is an unrealized opportunity for higher education to truly make an impact on the current generation as they prepare to move into the workforce. The presentation describes the design and structure of a new, unique undergraduate elective course introduced into the curriculum of a large, public University in the Northeastern United States. The design of the course is designed to inspire an “evidence-based” mindset, encouraging students to identify and use data relevant to them in their field of study and the larger world around them. Course goals are mapped to specific learning objectives, examples of exercises andassignments, a reading list, and a course syllabus. Instructors and institutions interested in bringing data science concepts to a broad audience can use this course as a foundation to build their own curriculum in this area.
