The academic calendar has no classes scheduled for Tuesday, October 11, and the make-up date is Friday, October 14. For observant students and faculty this poses a problem for evening classes because the Jewish Sabbath begins at sundown on Friday. For students who will not be able to attend classes, this should be considered a religious holiday like any other: they should be given an opportunity to make up any missed work (and should be required to do so); there should be no negative consequences for the absence.
Members of the faculty who will not be able to teach that night have several options, including arranging for a colleague to teach that class session or moving that night’s instruction to online delivery.
The CUNY schedule is hardly ideal, but working with our students to ensure that they receive a full complement of instruction is a priority for all of us,
