Passion and professionalism:
The arts in higher education
Thursday, May 8, 2014
8:30 – 10:00 AM
William and Anita Newman Conference Center
151 East 25th Street, Room 763
Guest Speaker: Robert Bucker
Dean of the School of the Arts, Portland State University
One of the most experienced American leaders in the arts in higher education, Robert Bucker has been a keen observer of large-scale changes in pre-professional arts education. He's also been involved in efforts to bring serious engagement with the arts to students from many non-arts disciplines. At California State University, Northridge, he was responsible not only for a major university's school of the arts, but also for the creation of a large and handsomely designed center for the performing arts. We have asked Bob to talk to us about what drew him to Portland State, and about the trends in higher education he finds most promising and most troubling.
Robert Bucker, who has 40 years of experience in fine and performing arts, is currently Dean of the College of the Arts at Portland State University, overseeing a college that includes the School of Architecture, School of Art and Design, School of Music, and School of Theatre and Film. From 2007 – 2013 Bucker was Dean of the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communication at California State University, Northridge, where he also served as the Executive Director of the new, state-of-the-art Valley Performing Arts Center. Buckner began his career as a middle school and high school vocal music teacher and choral director in Missouri. He served as the director of education for the Metropolitan Opera Guild and the voice chairman and choral conductor for the Presidential Scholars in the Arts program, founded by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. He developed a semester-long New York residency program, “Leadership and the Arts in New York,” with the faculty of the Hart Leadership Program at Duke University, serving as its Associate Director and teaching courses for a number of years. Later he was the dean of the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Peck School of the Arts, and dean of the School of Fine Arts at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Dr. Bucker earned his DMA in conducting at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, in 1991, having studied with Robert Shaw, Marcel Coureau, and Wilhelm Ehman. He previously earned a Master’s degree in music from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and a Bachelor’s degree in education in 1971 from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
