From: Dave Christy, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
To the Faculty and Staff of Baruch College,
While this letter is important to our College community, I will admit to having chosen a voice that is directed to the faculty of the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences.
Last month we hosted four well-qualified candidates for the position of dean. They were quite different in academic and administrative experience, and the divergence of preferences for each of them is understandable. Our search committee did an outstanding job of identifying very different kinds of candidates who were each attractive along multiple dimensions.
I have decided that it would benefit us to bring in an additional candidate identified by the search committee. Our next candidate has served as a dean of arts and sciences at another university, has an interesting academic record in biology and environmental science, and has a special commitment to global issues with a focus on Latin America. When I consider the comments from our faculty about whom they are seeking, I am hopeful that he may be a very good fit for Baruch and Weissman.
This candidate will visit our campus on Monday and Tuesday, February 8 and 9. The hectic activity of the first days of class will be over, and we will not conflict with a Senate meeting. There is a small challenge, however: the week of February 8 has only four class meeting days due to Lincoln’s Birthday on February 12; to reconcile class meeting days, Tuesday, February 9 follows a Friday schedule. Please choose to join your colleagues at the “Open Forum” on Tuesday, February 9 despite this scheduling issue.
During the first week of classes, I will distribute the CV and letter to you so that you will have plenty of time to review it. Once again, I ask that you resist reaching out to colleagues who may have worked with the candidate at other universities. I will also request your feedback by the morning of Thursday, February 11 at the latest.
Thank you for your continued participation in the recruiting process.
