Baruch Moves Up in UChicago Midwest Trading Competition

Four Seniors Take Fourth Place

NEW YORK, NY April 22, 2015- Baruch College finished fourth this month at the UChicago Midwest Trading Competition, in a field of 20 teams from Baruch College, Caltech, Carnegie Mellon University, Dartmouth College, MIT, Northwestern University, NYU, University of Chicago, University of Maryland and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Last year, in Baruch’s first year of participation, a different Baruch team finished 10th. The top three teams this year were from MIT, Dartmouth and Carnegie Mellon.

This year’s contestants were Siyuan Huang ’15, Weissman Mathematics; Nafyal Ibrat ’15, Weismann Mathematics; Bogdan Nikitin ’15, Weissman Actuarial Science; and Anik Roy ’15, Zicklin Finance.

In the annual competition, case studies are sent in advance to enable the teams to create and test custom algorithms. The competition tests both technical skills, in algorithm creation, and decision-making skills, requiring the team to recognize when the algorithm is not working.

In an article on the competition, Crain’s Chicago Business reported that Nikitin expressed caution about the idea of becoming a trader. “It seems very exciting, but you hear about the risks these people take every day and you have to see if you have the personality that fits that,” he said.
