Sad News on the Passing of a Student

I am deeply saddened to share with you the news that one of our students, sophomore and Macaulay Honors student Raphael Blanco, passed away yesterday. Raphael was a strong student who was actively involved in student life and his intellectual curiosity led him to explore majors in business and psychology. He had good friends at Baruch, and his presence on our campus will be missed.

Each of us will deal with this news in our own way as we process our feelings and reactions. I encourage any student who feels a need for support to reach out to the Counseling Center, which will provide walk-in hours in the Newman Vertical Campus in Room 2-110 between 9am and 5pm today, Tuesday March 12th. Students seeking support beyond these hours should call 646-312-2155 to set up an appointment, or they can visit the website without delay.

We are not yet aware of the details regarding Raphael’s funeral, but we will share this information as soon as it becomes available. Dr. Nancy Aries, Director of the Baruch Honors program, will also work with Baruch staff and Raphael’s friends amongst the student body to begin planning a memorial service, at which participation by the broader Baruch community will be welcome. We can rely on the strength of our community to help us cope with such sad and unfathomable news; and I urge students, in particular, to lean on each other, or any member of the Baruch faculty or staff, during this difficult time.
