Message From The President - Baruch College

April 18, 2013

To the Baruch College Community:

Today I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. David P. Christy as the next Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs of Baruch College, effective midsummer, 2013. Dr. Christy also will be appointed as a professor in the Department of Management of the Zicklin School of Business.

Dr. Christy’s selection as Provost was made on the basis of a national search that included open meetings with Baruch’s faculty, staff and students.  Dave is currently the Dean of the Orfalea College of Business at the California Polytechnic State University, and his experience as a business educator, researcher and academic leader are ideally suited to the current needs of the College.  But the fact that his background also includes training in and exposure to the arts and sciences gives me great confidence that he will be fully responsive to the needs and concerns of the entire institution.  We are fortunate to have recruited him, and I look forward to his arrival this summer.

I would like to take this opportunity to convey my thanks and great appreciation to Dean David Birdsell, who chaired the Provost Search Committee, and to the faculty and staff who served as members.  This search began in the spring of 2012, after the January departure of the former provost, Jim McCarthy.  Since that time, the Committee has worked diligently, together with a professional search consultant, to review candidates and identify individuals who had the right set of skills and experience.  In the end, I was presented with a number of strong choices, and I am well pleased with the outcome.

Though there will ample time and other opportunities in the coming days to properly acknowledge John Brenkman’s extraordinary service, I did not want to let this moment pass without expressing my heartfelt thanks to John, whom I asked (quite without warning) in late January 2012 to step in to replace the departing Provost Jim McCarthy.  John faced a number of immediate, major challenges as he took up his duties as Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, and he handled all of them with wisdom and in a highly effective manner. The entire Baruch College community owes Professor Brenkman an enormous debt for his outstanding service.   John has assured me that he will stay on as Interim Provost until Dave Christy’s arrival this summer.

With regards,

Mitchel B. Wallerstein
President, Baruch College
