Support CUNY in Fighting Additional Budget Cuts
Dear Baruch College Community,
The State Executive Budget includes a proposed $83.2 million University-wide reduction to CUNY’s senior colleges. This is in addition to the $205 million in reductions that have been absorbed by the University over the past couple of years. There is also a cut of $11.9 million resulting from the State’s current budget shortfall that is being rolled into the FY2011-2012 base.
If enacted, cuts of this magnitude will surely have a harmful impact. In a time when the economy is struggling and people are flocking back to college for retraining and new careers, this is not the time for disinvestment in our city’s and state’s human capital. When combined with record enrollment levels, continued budget cuts will result in a serious strain on resources and a corresponding impact in the quality of services CUNY colleges can offer.
Given that the legislature is currently in the process of negotiating the budget, now is a critical time for State leaders to hear from you.
How can you help? Log on to http://www.supportcuny.org and make your voice heard. There you’ll find sample letters that you can use or tailor specifically to your message in support of public higher education. With one click, you will be able to send the letter to a host of legislative committees and individual legislators. Because of State guidelines, please be sure to send from your home/personal computer, using a non-university address.
We need your support to protect the excellence of our academic programs and the important opportunities we provide students at Baruch College. It is crucial that we act now. Educating our citizenry is of vital importance to the future economic health of our city, state, and nation.
