Favorable Characteristics of International Cities

Modern cities are the home to most of the world's population and intellectual and economic capital. Each year, a comprehensive report is prepared by PriceWaterhouseCoopers of the top performing business cities in the world.

In 2012, the report analyzed a city's performance and functionality by evaluating ten (10) indicators across sixty (60) variables to reveal how well-balanced a city is for both businesses and residents.

A total of 27 cities were evaluated, resulting in the following overall rankings:

Three key factors governed the choice of cities:

Capital market centers. Many of the cities included are hubs of commerce, communications and culture. But all are financial capitals of their region—meaning each plays an important role not only locally but also as a vital part of a globalizing economic fabric.
Distributed over a broad geographic sampling. While each city is a center of finance and commerce in its own region and in many cases the world, collectively the 27 cities form a representative international distribution.
Balanced between mature and emerging economies.

The relevant data was collected from three main sources:

Global multilateral development organizations such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
National statistics organizations such as National Statistics in the UK and the Census Bureau in the U.S.
Commercial data providers.

The 27 cities were sorted from the best performing to the worst. The cities were then assigned a score from 27 (the best performing) to 1 (the worst performing). In the event of a tie, cities were assigned the same score.

Our current table highlights the TOP 10 performing business cities based on this report.
