New York City (NYC)
Sports and Professional Teams

NYC is a sports town. The metropolitan area has more major league professional sports teams than any other city in the country. It is also the commercial capital of the United States. Over 40 Fortune 500 corporations make their headquarters in the city. It is a cultural melting pot. Immigrants from many countries have made NYC their home, bringing with them diverse cultures and traditions. The City is a "university town". It has more colleges and universities than any other city in the country - 85 by one count, with a total of more than 400,000 students.

NYC, being a sports town, has all the major sports teams represented, and some major sports leagues make NYC their headquarters. Separately, an impressive variety of popular sports are played in NYC by local foreign born players. Many of the foreign born players, now retired, had once played in their home countries' national teams. They have now immigrated to the U.S. and reside in NYC. They maintain their edge by playing in organized leagues, and also strive to maintain the popularity of these sports by training the promising younsters in their communities. Examples include cricket, rugby, and field hockey.

In the following pages, we present information about major professional sports teams and sporting events that take place in NYC.
