Greenmarkets
INew York City's Greenmarkets are as diverse as the city itself. They bubble with action all year round as local residents, office workers, chefs, restaurateurs and tourists shop side by side. Twenty one of the city's green markets remain open throughout the winter, and local farmers brave the weather to sell the freshest vegetables, meat, cheese, fish and seafood, pickles, preserves, grains and baked goods to a discerning public.
The Greenmarket is a producer-only market following strict grow-your-own standards. There is no middle man, and food passes straight from the farmers' hands to the consumer. Selling directly to customers ensures not just the freshest ingredients possible, but also means that farmers, fishers and their children can keep doing what they love and feed the growing cities. It also means that people get to know who grows their food.
Greenmarket's farmers and fishers come from a broad section of the Northeast, including parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and New England. Many of the Greenmarket's participating farms also welcome visitors to their farms for seasonal "Pick Your Own", where people can pick their own berries, fruit and vegetables. However, it is recommended that people call in advance to make such an arrangement.
