Rechargeable Batteries and Cellphone Recycling
Rechargeable Batteries and Cellphone Recycling
In November 2009, as a part of expanding recycling efforts, collection
boxes were added at select Greenmarket locations for rechargeable
batteries and cellphones. Rechargeable batteries are commonly found in
cellular and wireless phones, laptop computers, cordless power tools and
radios, camcoders, digital cameras and a variety of other portable
electronic devices. When the battery's useful life is over, it can and
should be recycled. As a matter of fact, with the implementation of
Local Law 97 of 2005, it has been illegal for NYC residents to discard
rechargeable batteries in the trash as of December 2006.
The following battery chemistries can be recycled:
- Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd)
- Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH)
- Lithium Ion (Li-ion)
- Nickel Zinc (Ni-Zn)
- Small Sealed Lead* (Pb)
- All Cellphones
- No alkaline, lithium, non-rechargeable or wet-cell batteries
