  • The first New York City Marathon was held in 1970.
  • The course of the 2003 NYC marathon stretched 26.2 miles, passing through the streets of New York City's five boroughs: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan.
  • The NYC marathon involves approximately 35,000 athletes, 12,000 volunteers, thousands of city employees, more than two million spectators lining the course, and tens of millions more television viewers around the globe.
