Baruch College Launches "Opting Back In" Program For Professionals Rejoining the Workforce
Unique Career Assessment Program Starts in January 2008
New York, NY – January 3, 2008 – Professional women who have been out of the workforce for a number of years and now want to re-enter are at a serious disadvantage in the labor market. Seeking to re-enter the job market, they often have gaps of several years in their resumes, reflecting time spent raising children or other family responsibilities. Moreover, some of their know-how and skills, particularly regarding current issues and trends in the business world, may be dated.
In January 2008, Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business will launch a program specifically designed to help these people resume their career paths more quickly and painlessly. (Although specifically geared to women, the program welcomes men.) Designed by Cynthia Thompson, a professor of management; Nancy Leighton, a career counselor; and Peggy Segal, a former private equity banker now specializing in helping other women re-launch their careers, Opting Back In is an intensive three-day program that combines motivational skills, career assessment, and networking opportunities, with practical job-hunting and resume-building lessons.
“People who’ve been out of the workforce for a long time start to feel like they’re losing their grip,” Professor Thompson says. “They basically had to discontinue their careers to raise children. Now they want to go back—but not to a 70-hour work week. They want more flexibility, and they’re often unsure about what to do next.”
Many of these women are highly educated and motivated. They may have earned an MBA or other advanced degree; they have the potential to be high achievers. But the process of rejoining the workforce can be daunting. To further complicate matters, some women are looking to “switch gears” and explore new professions or even start their own businesses. Opting Back In has been constructed to help these women “package” themselves in new and compelling ways.
The first installment of what will be an ongoing program runs on January 9, 16, and 23, 2008 and takes place at Baruch College’s Newman Conference Center, 151 E. 25th Street, New York City. The $975 fee includes tuition and meals. Speakers include authors, HR directors, and executive recruiters, as well as women who’ve done it—successfully restarted their careers and professional lives.
