Accounting Today Names Baruch’s Wollman Distinguished Professor of Accountancy One of 2007’s Top 100 Most Influential People

Wollman Distinguished Professor of Accountancy Douglas Carmichael

New York, NY – September 28, 2007--Douglas Carmichael, the Wollman Distinguished Professor of Accountancy in the Stan Ross Accountancy Department of Baruch’s Zicklin School of Business, was named one of 2007’s  Top 100 Most Influential People by Accounting Today.

Carmichael is the only academic to make the list this year, marking the fourth time he has appeared on it. Accounting Today has previously selected him as one of the 100 most influential accountants in the country in 1999, 2003 and 2004, citing him as “a strong advocate for safeguarding ethics and integrity in the profession.” The 2007 list describes him as “one of the country's foremost authorities on auditing standards and financial integrity.”

"My appearance as the only academic on the list is an honor," Carmichael said.

Asked in the 2007 issue’s Q&A survey of whether it was possible for the accounting profession to engage in so many specialty services that it would lose its identity as a single profession, Carmichael said, “No. There are unifying features such as knowledge of accounting basics that will continue to support a single profession.”

Carmichael has served as the Wollman Distinguished Professor of Accountancy at Baruch since 1983. He is the founding director of the Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity, a discussion forum for a broad range of contemporary issues confronting U.S. corporations and capital markets. In April 2003 he was appointed to a three-year term as Chief Auditor and Director of Professional Standards of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). He has also served as a consultant for the Securities and Exchange Commission and as an expert witness on forensic accounting and independence issues. Carmichael is the co-author The CPA's Guide to Professional Ethics (John Wiley, 2000).

Currently teaching an auditing course at Baruch, Carmichael is particularly proud of his recent work with the Practitioners Publishing Company where he is developing professional standards manuals used by CPAs nationwide.
